There’s no doubting Apple’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch is a highly desirable piece of kit. But at £429 to £699, it does raise some serious Cover issues. Are you covered against theft, loss or damage?
As always with Cover, if you genuinely believe that there’s little chance of losing or damaging your Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch, and if you wouldn’t feel too much financial pain buying a new one, Cover isn’t really an issue. For those of us who are a little more accident prone, live in less than idyllic areas, or simply aren’t lucky enough to be able to come up with another £500 or so without any problem, it’s worth considering the possible benefits of Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch Cover.
The Apple Warranty
Apple does offer some degree of cover: it protects the device against technical defects for the first year. That doesn’t really make much difference as consumer law would probably hold you could expect the Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch to work without problems for this period of time anyway.
What’s significant about the warranty provided by Apple is that it doesn’t cover accidental damage. In particular, Apple usually specifically exempts any problems caused by liquids, so if you spill a cup of coffee over your Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch, you are screwed.
Household Cover
You will already have some degree of coverage for accidental damage at home, or theft through a burglary. The things to watch out for with the Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch are the excess and the per-item maximum. The excess is the amount of any claim which you have to cover yourself, meaning it is deducted from any payout. In some policies there may be an individual excess for high-value items such as an Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch.
You may also find your policy places limits on the payout for an individual item and that this could be below the replacement price of an Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch. In these circumstances you may be able to cover the Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch’s full replacement price by paying an additional fee on top of your standard premium.
It’s very important to note that unless they states otherwise, home Cover policies do not cover damage outside the home, which is significant with a highly portable device such as an Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch. Some policies do cover items outside the home but require you to detail the specific items, while others require an additional premium to cover such items.
Classification
You may need to check with your Cover provider to see how they classify the Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch. There are reports that different providers have classed it as a phone, a computer, or an entirely new category. This could affect the relevant excesses and limits which apply.
Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch Specific Cover
There are a host of companies offering dedicated Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch coverage. The specific coverage varies greatly, and premiums range from around £30 to just under £100. Depending on your home contents policy, this may work out better value than paying an extra fee to extend your household Cover (assuming that is an option), but don’t assume that dedicated Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch Cover is necessarily the best value option.
If you do look for a standalone Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch policy, the points to check carefully include the excesses, whether accidental loss is covered, whether the policy has an extended warranty included (to cover against technical problems), and whether the policy allows you to take the Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch abroad.
Finding specialist Kindle Fire HD 8.9” inch Cover companies can be difficult but you can browse a directory of the most popular providers such as Cover2Go and Protect Your Bubble at UK Cover Index. You’ll also find reviews of policies and providers submitted by real customers.
